    Hi,

I was sorry to hear about South Lanarkshire’s ridiculous plans to close Cathkin and other nurseries within the council. How they can consider closing a nursey which received the highest commendation possible from HMI is beyond me.

Is The Rutherglen Reformer interviewing the nursery at all?

I find it pretty suspect that their plans are so far in advance that they don’t directly affect the parents and children currently enjoying the facilities: is their strategy an attempt to implement their cuts with limited objections from the parents? I for one am going to make my strong feelings about such a poor decision known. Surely if families are aware of a possible closure, they will be reluctant to enrol their child at all? So will the council’s reasons in the future include this potential lack of demand for the service?

I am also aware of plans in SLC to provide a Behavioural Support Unit within the campus of Cathkin High School. Is this the real reason for closure? Perhaps it suits them to conveniently divert the let to this other service, making the controversial move seem smoother?

South Lanarkshire Council needs to get its priorities right. Cuts are one thing; depriving children of a sound and supportive education is quite something else. I think the EIS have got it right – ‘Why Must Our Children Pay?’
